COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR JOE S. JOHNSON
Command Sergeant Major Joe S. Johnson was born in Pinewood, SC and entered the US Army on 6 July 1972 at Fort Jackson, SC. Upon completion of Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training, he assigned to 1st Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment in Baumholder, Germany, where he served in every position from Rifleman to Squad Leader. Upon leaving Baumholder, Germany, he was reassignment to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, as a Processing NCO at the 120th Reception Battalion and later as a Drill Sergeant in Delta Company, 6th Battalion, 2d Brigade. Upon completing his Drill Sergeant duties, than Staff Sergeant Johnson attended the Basic Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia. Following graduation, he was assigned to 3d Battalion, 5th Airborne Infantry Brigade, Fort Kobbe, Panama. During his tour, he performed duties as Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant. Upon completing his assignment in Panama, CSM Johnson was reassigned as Operations Sergeant in the 18th Airborne Corps G3 (EDRE), Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Following his assignment at Fort Bragg, he had the honor of being assigned to the 3d US Infantry (The Old Guard), Fort Myer, Virginia. There he served as Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant. His next assignment took him to Italy, where he was assigned the 3d Battalion, 325th Infantry Airborne Combat Team in Vicenza, where he served a Battalion Operations Sergeant and later as a First Sergeant. While assigned in Italy, than First Sergeant Johnson, was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation PROVIDE COMFORT. While deployed in Iraq, First Sergeant was selected to attend the US Army Sergeants’ Major Academy. Upon graduating from the US Army Sergeants’ Major Academy, he returned to the 3d US Infantry (The Old Guard), Fort Myer, Virginia, where he served as the Operations Sergeant Major until he was selected for Command Sergeant Major and reassigned to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, as Command Sergeant Major 4th Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment . During this assignment, CSM Johnson’s deployed with his unit to Port-au-Prince, Haiti in support of Operation UPHOLD DEMOCRACY. Before redeploying from Haiti, CSM Johnson was assigned as the Command Sergeant Major for the 2d Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Light). Upon completion of this assignment, CSM Johnson was reassigned once again to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where he served as the Command Sergeant Major, Victory Brigade.
CSM Johnson has participated in a variety of operational deployments which included Operation PROVIDE COMFORT, Joint Task Force Bravo in North Iraq; Operation UPHOLD DEMOCRACY, Haiti; Operation MARATHON (PACIFIC), Wake Island and numerous other training and real work missions.
CSM Johnson’s military schools include Special Forces Platoon Confidence Course, Badtoza, Germany; BNCOC, Airborne School, Jump Master Course, Dragon Gunnery Course, Advanced Airborne School, ANCOC, First Sergeants’ Course, German Airborne School, US Army Sergeants’ Major Academy and the Command Sergeants Major Course.
CSM Johnson’s awards include the Legion of Merit (1OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (4OLC), Army Commendation Medal (2OLC), Army Achievement Medal (2OLC), Good Conduct Medal (10th Award), National Defense Ribbon (2d Award), Southwest Asia Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Ribbon (2d Award), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development (5th Award), and the Overseas Service Ribbon (3d Award). His badges include the Drill Sergeants Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Jungle Expert Badge, Three sets of Foreign Jump Wings, German Bronze Physical Fitness Badge, the Order of Saint Maurice and the Order of Saint Barbara.
After CSM Johnson’s retirement, and as a JROTC Instructor, he has held positions at St. James High School, Murrells Inlet, SC; Scotts Branch High School, Summerton, SC; and currently is an instructor at Westwood High School, Blythewood, SC.
CSM Johnson holds a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Voorhees College, Denmark SC and a Master’s of Science Degree from Southern Wesleyan University, Central, SC, both degrees are in Organizational Management. CSM Johnson is married to retired Command Sergeant Major Lou V. Hayes-Johnson and they have three children, and 6 grand children, a daughter Helena, who resides in Landover, MD with husband CW3 Magnus Thorpe and two children, Alexis and Magnus, a son Lamont, who resides in Saginaw, Michigan and Elliott who resides in Charlotte, NC, with wife Khalea, and 4 children, RaiQwan, Elliott, Jr., Jayla and Kameron.
